On April 8th the Black Hawk County Solid Waste Management Commission and the City of Waterloo will be hosting the Electronics Recycling & Household Hazardous Materials Drop-off Event for Black Hawk County residents at the Waterloo Waste Water Treatment Plant from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The event will see anywhere from 600- 950 vehicles, bringing in accepted materials from people's homes and garages.
A crew of 60 -70 volunteers is needed to make the day go smoothly and my office is tasked with volunteer recruitment. So any way you can let people know about this day AND our need for volunteers is much appreciated. We do a safety training and donuts in the morning and provide a full lunch & safety equipment for volunteers. It is eye opening for the volunteers to see the huge pile of electronics recycled at the end of the day, ranging anywhere from 22 to 41 tons, in just 5 hours.
Volunteers need to be 18 years of age or older. Volunteers helping with electronics will need to be able to safely lift 40 pounds. Volunteers will receive team-lift training and be provided with necessary safety equipment. Rugged pants and sturdy footwear are recommended (no sandals or flip-flops). The event will take place rain or shine. Volunteers are asked to bring appropriate clothing/coats/rain gear for working outdoors or in an unheated building. Please register to volunteer by Friday, March 31st if possible.
We have created an event on our outreach Facebook page about the volunteer opportunity where civic groups & potential volunteers can get more information and share with friends: https://www.facebook.com/events/12461274 as well as a general post about all the household items that will be taken for proper disposal or recycling that day: https://www.facebook.com/events/17346418
***Donuts, lunch, beverages, and all safety equipment will be provided to volunteers.
