Trees and landscaping offer many benefits to a neighborhood and community. Energy savings, environmental perks, beauty, and creating a warm and welcoming invitation to a space are just a few ways that trees can make a positive impact in a community.
Four years ago, Ritland and Kuiper Landscape Architects were hired to draw a comprehensive tree plan for the Walnut Neighborhood. Along with housing construction and renovation efforts in the neighborhood, planting trees is one more way to cultivate beauty and build a strong and vital community.
The Walnut Neighborhood is pleased this fall to have received a grant from the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa for Phase 3 of a comprehensive tree plan. Over the past 2 years, volunteers have helped to plant 168 new trees along the E. 4th Corridor from Franklin to Dane St, Iowa St., Dane, and E. 3rd St. We are gathering volunteers to help us in this year's effort to plant over 70 trees in the neighborhood for Phase 3! When: Thursday, October 19, 2023
Morning Shift: 8:30-11:45 a.m. Lunch provided from 11:45-12:45
Afternoon Shift: 12:45-4:00 p.m. Lunch provided from 11:45-12:45
Where: Park cars at 715 E. 4th St., Harvest Vineyard Church. Park in the NORTH parking lot. We will meet inside the church and it will be our base for the day (bathrooms, parking, lunch , etc..)
What: We will be planting container trees. Along with the help from the City of Waterloo Forestry Department, we will be digging holes, planting the trees, filling in the dirt, mulching, and staking/tying trees to keep upright. We are looking for 15-20 volunteers for each shift.
What to bring: work gloves and a shovel if you have one.
