Who We Are

Working to empower veterans by providing home modifications, rehabilitation and transitional housing enabling them to become independent individuals within their homes and community.

Our nonprofit has spent the past ten years committed to serving military members and Veterans through comprehensive resource support. We specialize in home modifications, community outreach, transition housing, and providing essential necessities. Veterans can visit our center and find not just services, but a comfortable, homelike atmosphere where they're understood and supported.

What We Do

HOME MODIFICATION:

Our organization offers modifications of existing homes to make them wheelchair accessible, or completes other modifications necessary to accommodate the veteran’s disability. If the existing home cannot be modified, AFIL will assist in finding another home, or help acquire land to build a new home. AFIL will also renovate donated homes to create more transitional housing for veterans.

FURNITURE FOR VETERANS:

When you donate to AFIL, you are making a significant difference in the lives of veterans living in your community. After you drop off your donated items, we use them to provide household furnishings and basic items to veterans just out of homelessness or veterans moving on from one of our transitional homes into permanent housing. Since 2017, there have been 618 veterans and their families helped by this program. The planet also benefits when you choose to ignore the dumpster and donate your items to AFIL. Over the past year, you’ve helped keep thousands of pounds of clothing, furniture and household items out of landfills.

TRANSITIONAL HOUSING FOR HOMELESS VETERANS:

AFIL currently has a transitional house on 9th street in Waterloo, IA that can house up to three veterans at a time. We work with the Black Hawk County VA office and HACAP to provide assistance with job skills, finance management, employment and case management to give homeless veterans a chance to get back on their feet and regain their self confidence so they can transfer their service and skills from the battlefield to the civilian community.

We provide transition housing for Veterans, furniture program, essentials needed for home, home modifications a resource center for them to come and enjoy while getting what they need.
