Who We Are
MercyOne is a connected system of health care facilities and services dedicated to helping people and communities live their best life. At more than 20,000 colleagues strong, MercyOne care providers and colleagues make health the highest priority. The system’s clinics, medical centers, hospitals and affiliates are located throughout the state of Iowa and beyond.
In northeast Iowa, MercyOne hospitals and clinics include MercyOne Waterloo Medical Center, MercyOne Cedar Falls Medical Center, MercyOne Oelwein Medical Center, and more than 100 primary care and specialty providers. MercyOne is headquartered in central Iowa, and was founded in 1998 through a collaboration between Catholic Health Initiatives (now CommonSpirit Health) and Trinity Health – two of the country’s foremost, not-for-profit Catholic health organizations. For more information, please visit www.MercyOne.org.
Consistent with its not-for-proft status, MercyOne reinvests all of its net income into the communities we serve, rather than distributing it to shareholders or private owners. Simply put, MercyOne exists to serve and benefit our communities.
What We Do
MercyOne is committed to improving the health of our communities. We regularly assess the needs of our communities (with special attention to low-income and minority populations), and reach out to fill the void that exists for many of our poor, disabled, elderly, and chronically ill.
Specifically, we:
- Conduct, coordinate or participate in studies to determine the most pressing health issues facing our communities.
- Collaborate with other agencies in our communities, from county health departments to social welfare agencies to the United Way agency, to make a bigger impact.
- Proactively reach out to those we are trying to help to ensure they have access to our programs and services.
Our hospitals also provide and are involved in hundreds of health promotion activities each year. For example, every one of our hospitals provides:
- Free and discounted care services to those who cannot afford to pay for health care through medical clinics and screenings
- Clinics and other community-based services
- Health education and promotion classes both at our hospitals and in the community
- Subsidized services are often provided at a loss because they are needed by the community. In fiscal 2018, MercyOne Northeast Iowa contributed more than $23 million to our communities and spent considerable time and resources advocating at the state capital for better health care for Iowans.Based on our not-for-profit status and the charitable nature of our programs and services, many of our facilities are exempt from income, sales and some property taxes. Our tax-exempt status also means we are able to solicit and receive philanthropic funds and government grants.
- The ability to access these funds is important as the health care industry as a whole struggles to raise adequate capital needed to continue to meet the ever growing and changing needs of our communities. Specifically, we are dedicated to investing in technology, facilities and programs to improve access to services, help our clinicians provide quality care and attract the most skilled and dedicated health care professionals.
- We invest to ensure that our mission endures
We invite you to join more than 400 volunteers that make up our volunteer team in northeast Iowa! Your unique talents and personal experience coupled with more than 3,100 associates help MercyOne maintain quality services and help carry out our mission everyday in the communities we serve.
Volunteer opportunities vary at each hospital. Opportunities include but are not limited to visiting and interacting with patients, greeting visitors and providing service to patients and families, driving patients to and from their appointments, assisting with clerical duties, and other projects throughout the system.
