Waterloo Community Schools

The Waterloo Schools community commits to a comprehensive system of education and support to assure that each and every student will graduate prepared for college, career, and citizenship as evidenced by continuing education, pursuing a career path, and contributing to a community.

The Waterloo Community School District includes the cities of Waterloo, Evansdale, Elk Run Heights, Gilbertville, and Raymond, part of the city of Cedar Falls, and certain unincorporated areas in Black Hawk County. The district is located entirely within Black Hawk County and encompasses approximately 150 square miles. The district is an independent unit of government authorized under Section 274.1 of the Iowa Code. The governing body of the district is comprised of a seven-member board elected for staggered three-year terms. Four members are required to reside in the director district represented, while three are elected at large. Daily administrative and academic functions of the district are the responsibility of the Superintendent, who is appointed by the board.

Waterloo is one of the 10 largest school districts of Iowa's 377 public school systems. The enrollment is approximately 10,555 students. The district currently operates two regular and one alternative high school, four middle schools and eleven elementary schools. The district has approximately 851 full-time equivalent (FTE) professional employees (including administrators and teachers) and 558 FTE support staff. Approximately 40% of the teaching staff have advanced degrees.

The district provides a full range of educational services to students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12. These services include regular and enriched academic education, special education for students with special needs, career education, and numerous individualized programs such as specialized instruction for at-risk students and for limited-English-speaking students. An International Baccalaureate program is also available at both East and West High.
