Who We Are
UNI-CUE's Mission is to provide a positive environment for lifetime learning where individuals may pursue and continue their educational goals and prepare for careers.
What We Do
The University of Northern Iowa Center for Urban Education (UNI-CUE), located in downtown Waterloo, IA, provides outreach to the community. The UNI-CUE supports a number of programs to assist area residents and university students in pursuing and continuing their educational goals and prepare for careers. These programs and services include three federally-funded TRiO programs - the Educational Opportunity Center, the Educational Talent Search Program, and the Classic Upward Bound Program, and UNI-CUE's Tutoring Center. The UNI-CUE is looking for university students to tutor K-12 students one-on-one for a period of 1-1/2 hours each week during the spring and fall semesters. Since 1969, the UNI-CUE has provided a positive environment for lifetime learning. Its staff embrace the concept of continuing and part-time education and collaborate with the University and the City of Waterloo to match resources with the community's needs. In doing so, the UNI-CUE continues the original mission established by its founders... to "develop relevant educational programs to alleviate inequalities of educational opportunities in the urban environment, improve communications, and make university resources accessible to the community." UNI-CUE is also home to three federally-funded TRiO programs: Educational Talent Search, Educational Opportunity Center, and Classic Upward Bound. In addition, the UNI-CUE provides free tutoring services to K-12 students from Black Hawk County. During the 2013 Spring semester, more than 70 UNI students tutored a K-12 student one-on-one during a standing appointment of 1-1/2 hours. Tutoring is provided at the UNI-CUE, which is located in downtown Waterloo, IA, just a 15-minute drive from campus.
