Volunteer: Board of DirectorsShare your time and their talents with one of the oldest nonprofits in the Cedar Valley. We are looking for individuals who would guide the future of our organization by becoming an active member of our board of directors. Meeting are once a month on the first Monday of month at noon. We specialize in offering licensed and accredited child care to working-class families who could not otherwise afford it. We provide child-care services for up to 100 children from nearly as many families. Families in Waterloo with children enrolled at Growing Minds are more culturally and racially diverse than those of any other private child-care center in the city. Moreover, we sponsor more financial assistance to families than other Waterloo facilities because a higher proportion of their enrollees qualify for it. Ninety percent of their enrollment consists of children from families that qualify for aid. This proportion is inverse from that of most other private child-care centers in the Valley. An important thing to know is that many of these families find our services essential for them to seek employment in the community and sustain a family income. In 2023 we changed our name to Growing Minds Early Learning Center. This name change signifies the organization's commitment to empowering families, fostering educational opportunities, and transforming lives within our community. Although our name has changed, our commitment to supporting low-income families remains steadfast. We will continue to provide affordable child care services that prioritize the well-being, safety, and educational development of each child in our care. By offering comprehensive programs, nurturing environments, and supportive resources, we aim to empower families and break the cycle of poverty. Volunteer: Volunteer MentorCedar Valley Makers (CVM) is a non-profit, member organization with a focus on learning and making. We promote collaborative learning, creative design and manufacturing (making) for people of all ages and skill levels. We’re able to accomplish this by providing access to tools, machines and training inside our makerspace.
Volunteers are needed to assist with our community educational events that focus on learning by doing, design thinking and entrepreneurial spirit. As a volunteer you’ll be a learner and mentor. You’ll first learn about the tools, equipment and support software in our level 1 Fablab. These tools include laser engravers, 3D printers, Cricut vinyl cutters and other easy to use tools. After learning and making with our equipment, you’ll be asked to assist as a guide or mentor for youth and adult groups using our space for educational events. Volunteer mentors will also have access to the level 1 space and equipment for personal use during normal hours of operation when events are not taking place.
A typical CVM event lasts approximately two hours and there are approximately six events in the fall of the year and six in the spring of the year. If interested, please send an email message to info@cedarvalleymakers.org to set up a time for a makerspace tour and conversation. Volunteer: Fold and Size Clothing DonationsAFIL loves to provide items to our local Veterans. The community is great about donating these items, but we need your help going through them and getting them to the right place. If you are looking to help out in your community but not really wanting to lift a whole lot, this job is for you! AFIL gets donations on almost a daily basis. With so much coming in, we do not always get through it all each week. This is where you come in. We need help sorting through donated clothing, bedding, and other smaller items. This includes removing any items with stains, wiping down and test kitchen items, folding shirts, jeans, shorts, and sweat pants. After these items are folded, we need to know what size they are and have them put on the correct shelves. If you have a heart for Veterans and want to help out in your community, then we would love to meet you. Please respond to this need and we will set up a time to have you tour the location. After the tour, if the cause fits, you can join in and further our mission of making lives better for our local Veterans. Thank you:) Agency: Americans For Independent Living AFIL loves to provide items to our local Veterans.
