Serve the City, hosted by Hope City Church, is an annual community outreach event where hundreds of volunteers come together to demonstrate the love of Jesus through practical acts of service across the Cedar Valley. From landscaping and painting to serving local nonprofits, schools, neighborhoods, and families, volunteers unite to make a tangible difference while building stronger relationships within the community.
Serve the City offers more than 50 volunteer teams with a wide variety of opportunities to serve throughout the Cedar Valley, allowing volunteers to choose a project that best matches their interests and abilities. Responsibilities vary by outreach but may include landscaping, painting, cleaning, organizing, packing and distributing supplies, serving meals, assisting local nonprofits, supporting community events, and encouraging community members through acts of kindness. Volunteers are expected to arrive on time, work collaboratively, follow their team leader's instructions, and help create a positive, welcoming environment while serving others with excellence and compassion.
No prior experience is required, just a willingness to serve and make a difference in the Cedar Valley community. Opportunities are available for individuals, families, small groups, and teams, with projects suitable for a variety of ages and abilities. Many outreach locations are accessible to individuals with disabilities, though accessibility varies by project.
Volunteers will receive a free **RED Serve the City T-shirt** to wear during their outreach. We ask that volunteers wear comfortable clothing appropriate for the weather and closed-toe shoes. Some outreach projects involve outdoor work, so bringing work gloves and any requested tools is encouraged when applicable. Light breakfast snacks will be available during the kickoff gathering at either **RiverLoop Plaza in Waterloo** or **Hope City Church – Cedar Heights Campus**. Lunch will be provided following the event at both the **Hope City Waterloo Campus** and **Hope City Cedar Heights Campus**. Additional outreach-specific details, including any special instructions or materials needed, will be communicated by each outreach leader prior to Serve the City.
