Volunteer: Reading Buddies

Reading Buddies is a program of RSVP and the Volunteer Center of Cedar Valley. Reading Buddy volunteers work with Elementary students to build proficiency and provide encouragement to students. 

Volunteers typically meet with 3-4 Elementary students on a weekly basis for a total of one hour (approx. 15 minutes per student). The Reading Buddies program has been established in the Waterloo Schools for over 15 years. This year, a Reading Buddies pilot program will begin in the Cedar Falls Schools.

Volunteer: Disaster Response Team Member

Purpose: To assist in the quick and efficient set up of a Volunteer Reception Center (VRC) in the event of a disaster in Black Hawk County

Roles and Responsibilities

Participate in 1 4 hour training and simulation Attend annual refresher course as needed When VRC is activated assist in setting up the VRC Help train other volunteers who sign up to help in VRC Help fill VRC roles as needed (greeter, interviewer, phone bank, etc.)

Commitment: 1 year. Includes training session, in person simulation and attendance at annual refresher course. 

Benefits: Networking, fulfillment of civic responsibility, skill development in disaster training
